For three weeks a group of about 15 bottle nosed dolphins have been calling the Shrewsbury River home. Most likely they found their way into the river while chasing food, however there is no clear cut explanation for their reluctance to leave the river and return to the waters of the Atlantic. Speculators are saying they may be afraid of the noise from nearby bridge construction. Whatever the reason while they remain in the river, marine enforcement agencies are warning people to give the mammals a wide berth. Regardless of the type of vessel (including kayaks), there is a 50 yard exclusion zone to protect the animals. Anyone found to be harassing them could face fines of up to $10,000.

Hello to all my fellow fishermen out there. The “Just One More” has been catching large stripers ! The last two trips have been open boat trips. Tuesday we had aboard, Bob Steirs and his son, Keith Reardon, Jerry and friends. Running the boat that morning, I happened to look down and was watching a school of striped bass swim away from the boat ! They were 20 lb. fish and bigger. We worked a large school of bunker that were down deep and a large mass of striped bass under them. We had 4 bass on at a time 3-4 times that morning. When that died down, we went a little further for some anchored up chunking and only landed one nice bass. So we moved again and this time found the bunker on top. We worked the school with live snagged bunker and baits on the bottom. It was a good day fishing with striped bass caught up to 25 lbs. We lost many more that were hooked up. One even straightened out a snap after a short battle !! Wednesday we had aboard, Jack Mohan, Marion and her husband, and Mike and Amanda. I could not find the bunker we had the previous morning, but went to a productive spot and anchored up. We never had to leave!! Marion caught the first of the day with a striper at 30 lbs. That was her first striper ever! Not a bad start. Jack landed a couple and decided he wanted to release his to fight another day. Then Amanda landed her first striped bass ever at around 32″. The women always out fish the men. Congratulations girls !! We limited out with bass up to the 30 lbr. with more released and more fish missed. Not a single bluefish ! Some really good striper fishing.

Next dates that are open to charter are : July 4, 7, 8, 10, 11. Next weekend date open is Sunday, July 20.
I think these big stripers will remain around well into July. Who wants to go??

Below you will find the pictures from the last two trips mentioned above. THANKYOU.

Hello from the crew of the CAPT. DAVE,

Be sure to stop-by our website at http://www.CAPTDAVE.net

Had a great day fishing aboard the CAPT. DAVE and would like to share it with others? If you would like to see your name and your group’s photo in your favorite newspaper or magazine (Star Ledger, Asbury Park Press, Home News, The Fisherman, etc.) just forward this e-mail to them and say that you are a subscriber and would like to see it in print! These publications are always looking for articles, and with any luck you will be in their next edition! Also, feel free to post this message in your favorite chat room or online message board.

The winter pattern of stormy wet weather and high winds still dogged us these last few charters. One party experienced 30kts plus west winds and 5 ft seas in the bay – which is not the norm for this time in the spring. So far, for the most part, everyone battled large blues with some nice sized stripers mixed in. For Memorial Day weekend, the weather looks favorable with highs near 80-degrees, which is way over due.

May 16th: Our good friend Steve Myers from Sunlife Financial out of Island Hts, hosted a charter for Merril Lynch from Paramus, Freehold, Southern Monmouth, Toms River, Jersey City and Princeton. We always look forward to Steve’s parties because he always does it up right with plenty of food and refreshments and he’s always got a good crew. This gang had a good shot of blues, and Joe Higgins took the pool with a respectable 36” striped bass. Nice fish Joe! See you guys again this week.

May 17th AM: Another regular, the Tom Ostrander party from Wanaque. This was sort of a family trip with a number of young fishermen on board. A trip to the back bay for some calmer waters produced a pick of blues for this gang. The winner of the adult pool was John Boss from Hawthorne, and Chal Huber from Wanaque took the junior division. Congratulations guys, you’re always welcome aboard.

May 17th PM: The PC Richard and Son party sponsored by Randy Weaver of Whippany. It was another windy afternoon, so Capt. Kevin took this party to some of our favorite drops in the back-bay. A solid pick of blues for the afternoon was in order for this party with Randy Weaver taking the pool with a 9-pound blue. Nice fish Randy, we enjoyed your group, and we hope to see back again soon.

May 19th: The Bristol Elks from Bristol headed by James Galione. Another repeat customer. This party was canceled last Monday because of a poor weather forecast and decided to give it a try this Monday. With a forecast of west winds from 15 to 20 knots, a ride to the back-bay to calmer waters was in order. After several drops, it was a slow pick of fish for this group. As the day progressed, the wind picked up to over 30 knots with 5 ft seas in the bay. Dave had to call this trip 30 min. short before a wind against tide situation started, and conditions worsened. They were a hearty crew though, and they did not complain once. Joe Rinkus won this pool with a hard-earned blue. Nice going Joe! Thanks guys, Dave owes you 30 minutes.

May 20th AM: The C.D. I. Services Co., headed by Jeff Tuscano. This was a first-time charter for this gang. With birds working on the Knoll, we made our drop. Within 5 minutes, the first fish was on. There was hot action for about 2-hrs ‘till the tide dropped out. One of the clients, who did not know how to play doctor while fishing…patience, patience, patience…made a remark: “why don’t we go were the other boats are?” was taken aback when the tide started back up and the fish turned on again. Ray Connely from Bedminster took the pool on this charter. Nice going Ray, you have bragging rites ‘till your next charter. A fun group, we hope to have them back again soon.

May 20th PM: The gang from Fujitec Elevators out of N.Y. One of my favorite groups. These guys cannot seem to get a break with the weather. A drop on the Knoll produced a solid pick of fish and a lot of cold wet weather. Denis Chatfield took the pool on this charter. See you guys next week when the sun is out and we have 80-degree temperatures again (we hope)!

Thanks again for your generous gratuities, we’re always happy to be out on the water with you and we’re looking forward to seeing you all this season!

Best wishes,
