Join the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife as we celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 27 and 28, 2008 from 10:00 – 4:00 daily at the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County.

This FREE event is fun for the whole family!

Kids between the ages of 8 and 16 will be able to try their hand at fishing in our education pond. We’ll supply all the equipment and instruction for the day. For those kids under 8, we will have our Kiddie Trout Tank stocked with fish from the hatchery. And we’ll even have our casting area set up, where anyone can learn how to cast. There will be other activities for the kids in our Kiddie Tent.

There will be a Sportsmen’s Flea Market with vendors and sport shops selling everything you need to get started in fishing and hunting. There will even be fishing guides on hand if you want to book a great fishing trip.

Wildlife artists with wares to sell and conservation groups will be here as well. See what other bureaus in the Division are working on. There will be educational lectures and demonstrations happening throughout the day.

Learn to shoot a bow and arrow at our beginning range. And for those of you who are experienced bowmen, our free 3-D archery range will be set up. Feel free to bring your own bow and walk the course as you take aim at a variety of targets in realistic settings. The Hunter Education Program will be running a hunter education field session at 11:30 and if you join them on the field walk, you won’t have to do the field walk when you go for your hunter education test.

Food vendors will be on hand if you want to buy your food, if not, feel free to bring your own lunch and enjoy one of our many picnic areas on the property.

Had the John Counterman charter out this Saturday with friends. It was a slow start with looking around in the back bay but that didn’t work out. Started working our way out on the reach channel picking away at shorts. Found birds working it so we made a drift by them and picked up some blues. Used live peanuts of almost candy bar size but the fluke were hanging on to the bait and not getting the hook. Switching over to squid and killies did the trick with several more hook ups! Got a few more shorts than we would like but all-and-all we had some fine action. Two fluke and three blues for the table though.

Had the Terrell Party out on Saturday, waited a little bit in the morning for the Northwest wind to lay down before going out, went out to the Alex Carlson Reef. We had great long drifts which they were picking up 5 to 8 fish per drift. Finished the day with 9 keepers largest 6.5 lbs, but the disappointing think was we had over 45 fish from 17.5″ to 16″ but we had great time with a great East wind (what happened to a West wind for the afternoon)

I had Tom Wortmann and friends out Monday night we looked up north and found some bunker, real hard to find. After snagging a dozen or so a pesky little Brown Shark was hidding under my boat and everytime we pulled in a bunker he would bite half of it off.
So we push on and found the Bass, we had 6 in the boat in 45 minutes then things slowed down for about 15 minutes and my screen lit up again and all -ell broke lose, well this is were we needed more bunker, they were deep they were on top they were all over, they took live bunker, dead bunker, they took chunks. Some bluefish mixed in, but not many. After we ran out of all bait we took a count, 2 in the box and 10 released largest 41 lbs
photo is the 41lb fish (which was released)
Going again tonight and maybe the rest of the week with this weather.

Started out fluking up north , didnt see any bunker on the way up in any great #S. We Didnt have much drift and only a couple of keepers came up. So we decided to give the blues a try for some action.

Joined the jigging fleet and caught all the blues you could have wanted for an hour.

Fluked a little more added 4 more keepers and a few seabass and ling.

Decided to look for some stripers on the way home. Found bunkers with bass all over them.
The fun began catching their limits to 36 lbs and releasing a few.

and a few seabass/ling.
