The STRIPED BASS are still out there and the ‘Just One More’ found them yesterday!! We had aboard the Bluefish Bob Donahue charter. We rode around a while looking for bunker schools down the beach, but did not find any. Back to one of my favorite spots in the bay and we started to catch fish right away. By the end of the day, Bob landed the largest striped bass of the day at 38″ and near 25 lbs. !! We did not limit out on the bass but had a steady pick. Other run offs were missed. Many bluefish were landed as well as some monster 4′ smooth dogfish. So if you want a late shot at striped bass, now is the time to go. Fluke fishing in the bay was one of the best in 20 years according to my friend Capt. Al on the Sea Horse who was first mating that day. 150 keepers and hundreds of throw backs. Now the fluke fishing is really starting to heat up . Time to get out there.

Dates available to charter are: July, 1, 4, 6, 13, 14, 16, 18. There are 2 Sundays in those dates.

Justin caught a very nice 23″ fluke and then continued to catch many more keepers. We had a good pull of fluke the whole day. All the fish were between 19″ and 23″. We also landed at least 25 short fluke with many just under the regulation mark of 18″. Bluefish we also taking our baits and many were released. The fluke fishing right now is in full swing, and the fishing is quite good . Water temp. in the bay was up to 71.3 degrees but the fish on the bottom were still coming up cool to the touch. Now is the time to go for some great tasting flattie fillets!!!!

The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda had a charter last week from Rusling Paving and Concrete of Trenton out for a day of fishing. The group had a great time, tookhome quite a few fish meals, and totally enjoyed the day. On Saturday Captain Frank fished for fluke and managed to pull quite a few keepers despite having to try several different spots. Pool winner was a 7.5-pound flattie. On Sunday they wreck fished with good success and managed a good catch of sea bass in the 1-3 pound range.
The “Star Fish” with Captain Carl Sheppard fished two parties last Saturday. The morning party boated over 200 black sea bass up to 5.25 pounds. They also caught over 10 large blackfish which had to be released. The afternoon group was a bachelor party which managed to put a good number of sea bass up to 3.5 pounds in the cooler in addition to having four hours of fun and festivity. On the way in they stopped for some bird play and closed out the day with some feisty 2-pound bluefish on metal lures.
Captain John Koegler of the “Pop’s Pride” is now ready to go after some extra spring work to upgrade the entire boat. Captain John is itching to get into some of the solid wreck fishing in addition to heading offshore for some blue fin tuna.
Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” was off the water for a few days as he got re-powered with a new 300 hp engine. He too is looking to get into the sea bass fishing in 90-100 feet of water as well as some of the blue fin tuna. In addition to charters he is running several open boat trips in the upcoming days.

The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda fished for black sea bass last weekend and found a good number of fish, but putting keepers on the deck took some work. Most of the keepers on Saturday were in the 1-3 pound range. Pool winner was Ray from Waretown with a 3-pounder. Sunday’s fishing was hampered by strong winds and high seas of 4-6 feet. Most fish were 1-2 pounds. The pool winner Sunday was Richie with a 2+ pounder. Next week the “Miss Beach Haven” will be targeting fluke as well as sea bass.

Captain Lindsay Fuller has announced that he has brought his boat, “June bug” back to Beach Haven from its winter quarters in Manteo, North Carolina.
Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” is continuing to run open boat trips for wreck fishing, fluke drifting, and striped bass fishing. This is a good way to go fishing with a pro without paying the price of a full charter.
He and his charter limited out with large stripers in just over an hour! ANOTHER FULL LIMIT of striped bass, including trophy tags being filled out aboard the “Just One More” for 4 anglers. We had double headers on multiple times and even a triple. We were throwing back keepers as well as some short bass. The monster bluefish were around the boat all day gorging on rain fish. We caught plenty on our clam baits, but also caught them on topwater plugs!! That action lasted about 4 hours. The stripers were up to a high of 34″. The water temperature was up to 65 degrees in Sandy Hook Bay, but that is only on the surface. The water is still much cooler down below. If you want to catch your striper, now is the time!!

The boats of the Beach haven Charter Fishing Association have been fishing for a variety of fish including black sea bass, fluke, striped bass, and bluefish.
The “Star Fish” and Captain Carl Sheppard report some great fishing last weekend. Prior to the start of the summer flounder season Captain Carl was putting his parties on some drop and reel wreck fishing. On Saturday the Tom Sokolis party of 11 anglers brought 150 sea bass to the boat. The best fishing was in water over 90-feet deep with a pool winning fish of 6-pounds. He fished on Sunday for fluke and caught over 30 fish, but all were throwbacks. He then caught some bluefish to send the anglers home with fish.
Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” had a party out wreck fishing and also found the fish in 90-feet of water. The Chris Gadd family had well over 75 fish including 25 keeper sea bass. The next day the McKee party tried trolling along Long Beach Island looking for big bass. The northeast winds made fishing difficult and they returned to Little Egg Inlet where they boated one bluefish.
Captain Fran had the Nutatis party out for two days of fluke fishing. On Saturday they boated over 50 fish to find a pair of keepers up to 21.5 inches. On Sunday the same group had problems getting a good drift going, but the tide switched, they caught over 45 fluke but only one keeper.

The Memorial Day weekend produced plenty of stripers despite all the boat traffic. A 36 lb. striped bass was landed of Friday the 28th.!! We had out the Fred Foley charter that day. It was Fred’s turn to land the largest striper this season so far on the “Just One More”. He did not have to wait long, as Fred landed that huge fish in the first five minutes of the trip!! It seemed like he was hooked up as soon as we were anchored. Congratulations Fred! We limited out on stripers and were throwing others back. 35″ fish. On the afternoon trip, we had aboard the Ernie Aponte charter form Interome. As soon as the boat came tight on the anchor, it was non stop action. We limited out for 6 people in one hour! We had doubles on as well as a triple at one time. Throwing stripers back for the rest of the trip. Super action with many anglers catching their first striped bass ever. Saturday we had aboard Mark, retired from the U.S.M.C.. Fishing was a little slower but we managed to land six striped bass to a high of 35″ with bluefish mixed in as well. Sunday we had aboard the Mike Kochen charter, and what do you know?? Another full limit of stripers aboard the “Just One More”!! Fish were up to a high of 35″ and more bluefish were landed. So as you can see, the fishing is still really good. Water temp. in the bay was over 62 degrees, but that is only on the surface. The baits, sinkers, and fish are still coming up cool, or cold to the touch. This is definately one of the best spring striper runs in a long time. Let’s catch some bass together!!

You should have been on the open boat trip!! Once again the open boat trip had a banner day!! We had aboard:Jeff Grabiec and Dom, Scott Lavenberg and his son, and Ron Rand. We had another full limit of striped bass and could not close the cooler. There was a couple of smaller stripers, about 29″ but they went up to a whopping 32 lbs.!! Most of the stripers were very large, all in the mid 20 lb. range. Scott and his son both landed the same large striper. One hook was in the bass’s gut, and the other was in his lip. So who was sleeping at the rod?? Ron Rand waited patiently all day for his striper. It finally hit and he fought the fish on a light weight rod, with a Penn 930 reel. It took a full 25 minutes to subdue the 32 lbr. in the strong current. We were already limited out, so I revived the fish for several minutes over the side and it swam away very healthy. A lot more healthy then on the dinner plate!! No bluefish were landed, but we did have a few bite offs. What a super day all around: flat calm water, bright sunny day, not too hot, and a great bunch of guys!! It is time to catch some stripers. Congratulations Ron Rand on the big fish of the day.

Dates open to charter are: June 1, 7, 8, 10, 13.

Split charter with 2 other anglers is still open. June 14, 15, 16. Your choice of the date.

Yesterday we had aboard the Jim Houston charter. We left the dock at 7 am and were limited out with large striped bass for six anglers by 9 am !!!! The largest striper went 36″. We played catch and release for the rest of the trip and were throwing back keeper striped bass as well as shorts and bluefish for the remainder of the day. What a super trip with doubles on at times and other hits missed. The stripers were not commiting to the baits too well and were just lipping the clams. We lost many more that just spit the clam out. But even with that, we got a super fast full limit. Big smiles all around.

It was just the opposite with the Ernest Dellheim charter in the afternoon. We had a full compliment of six anglers again and landed only one small bluefish. Jerry was the lucky angler. Conditions really changed for the worse after the first charter. The wind came out of the east. Blew fairly hard and gave us a wind against tide situation. I believe the east wind really shut down the fishing as the front was coming in. Not excuses, but just the facts with the conditions. Those guys deserve another shot as the bass fishing has been super till last evening.

Dates available to charter are: May 24, 25. June 1, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13.

Split Charter with a father and son: Your choice of the date. June 14, 15, 16. You would split the cost with Mark and his son. A great way to fish with a smaller group.

Open Boat Date: Wednesday, May 26. Full day striper fishing. 7am to 2 pm. Everything included as usual. Bring that family member or friend you have been wanting to take out. $100.00 per head. You must call to reserve your spot. 908-472-2684. Thankyou.

Attached you will see a photo of Jim Houston’s charter from yesterday! Another full limit !
